<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Who is behind on projects to blog? Me? Maybe... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's another set of matching separates from the summer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-reMMDIJ7rPE/WAf302qXcGI/AAAAAAAABDk/w8NvPD03kSsv0Sn8FFNkzAXlVEOzXMHDgCLcB/s400/B-IMG_3748.JPG" width="300" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's the same top as the one at the bottom of <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/08/winslow-hunter.html" target="_blank">this </a>post, modified from my raglan peasant top, which I still haven't blogged. I used the decorative edge of the fabric for all hems. Not much else to say, except that it's too bad the ruffle is caught up on one side in all these pictures. </div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zlnOZiC3AGs/WAf31whdSKI/AAAAAAAABDw/mljfhl3UfWs8IGWpyQ43Gerg4ABPKQKOQCLcB/s1600/F1-IMG_3768.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zlnOZiC3AGs/WAf31whdSKI/AAAAAAAABDw/mljfhl3UfWs8IGWpyQ43Gerg4ABPKQKOQCLcB/s400/F1-IMG_3768.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Stylist!? Why is my ruffle tucked under? Haha!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The bottoms are the <a href="http://helenscloset.ca/product/winslow-culottes/" target="_blank">Winslow </a>culottes. I just gathered them instead of pleating to match the top. They are also shorter than the shortest size, just like my first pair. <img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U9zPMwYQiN8/WAf31xMulnI/AAAAAAAABD4/jCi1lys4RSAZS9mDSfKf6RkDyYbiglw4wCLcB/s400/IMG_3489.JPG" width="400" />You can see here in my cutting layout that I had a fabric challenge. I love fabrics with an eyelet border, and I bought this piece off Ebay for a song. It was 17" wide and about seven yards long, maybe longer. What to do with it? I was a bit stumped until Helen put out the Winslow pattern. I wasn't interested in skirt that's 17" long, but I'm happy to wear shorts that length. I was most concerned about the edging being nice around the hem, so I sacrificed the pockets and cut each leg out in one piece. You can see, maybe, in the picture above how I overlapped the pattern pieces. Other pattern changes were the same as my test pair -- lengthening the back piece at the crotch and shortening the center front seam by 1" at the waist.<br />
<img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-duQyoqkCBcU/WAf32J4hTPI/AAAAAAAABD0/0K7tJ1coMFMkWJcVYGIptCqwA5770d_hgCLcB/s400/S-IMG_3710.JPG" width="268" />I didn't think to get a close-up of my accessories, but I'm wearing a pair of boots that belonged to my friend's mom in the 70's. I love that!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QRwUeGnYs9Y/WAf31E9DgaI/AAAAAAAABDs/3rYG5vBk8Hw3_g2UukzMScyWaLfCAu0lQCLcB/s1600/F-IMG_3760.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QRwUeGnYs9Y/WAf31E9DgaI/AAAAAAAABDs/3rYG5vBk8Hw3_g2UukzMScyWaLfCAu0lQCLcB/s400/F-IMG_3760.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Can you see the feather earrings my friend made me?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I definitely wear this set mostly as separates. The top is cute with jeans. I wear the culottes with my navy version of <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/02/rite-of-spring-shorts.html" target="_blank">this </a>top. It's fun, though, to put together an over the top outfit for running around a festival. I love playing hippy princess!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
When I go to music festivals, I do like to see all the shows, but... the most fun part for me is playing dress up for the weekend with my girlfriends. We all bring our most fun, crazy clothes, and we hang them up to share. I also find it really freeing when I sew. I can try a crazy fabric or experiment with a new shape in old quilting cotton scraps, and I know I'll at least be able to wear it at a festival and be far from the wildest dressed reveler. <br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pretty Princess Party Palace</td></tr>

We had a great time this year! I took these pictures at <a href="http://summermeltdownfest.com/" target="_blank">Summer Meltdown</a>. I wore this outfit to watch the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pap0ABY36R4" target="_blank">Shook Twins</a> perform.<br />

I went to the <a href="http://www.georgeamphitheatre.com/" target="_blank">Gorge </a>for a concert over Labor Day, and I took some pictures of another two-piece set I made. These are Megan Nielsen's <a href="http://megannielsen.com/collections/bottoms/products/tania-culottes-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">Tania Culottes</a> with my now TNT hack of my sloper. You can see other iterations of the crop top <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/07/chambray-felicity-skirt.html" target="_blank">here </a>and as a dress <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/05/blue-shift.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/05/shifting.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I've made another one, also, which I haven't blogged yet. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DyhQYnQGSCo/V-6bVRkiNrI/AAAAAAAABCk/qlB2rCdg2Uo_UHpwxvGZP44LgmGurQ-OgCLcB/s1600/IMG_3897.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DyhQYnQGSCo/V-6bVRkiNrI/AAAAAAAABCk/qlB2rCdg2Uo_UHpwxvGZP44LgmGurQ-OgCLcB/s320/IMG_3897.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The fabric is rayon challis in a ditsy floral print on a turquoise background. I love that it looks green from a distance. The fabric feels luscious, so light and airy, and it was easy to sew after I saturated it with spray starch. I was thrilled to see the drape after I washed out the starch. I used chambray for the bias trim to finish the top and for the waistband on the culottes. Yes, both pieces coordinate perfectly with my other sets of separates, <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/08/winslow-hunter.html" target="_blank">1</a>, <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/07/chambray-felicity-skirt.html" target="_blank">2</a>, <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/06/chambray-ruffle-set.html" target="_blank">3</a>. Chambray overload? I have more...<br />

Do you like the back detail with the criss-cross straps? I really like it. The culottes would get more wear, honestly, if they were just a touch longer. I cut the short version out at the hem length for the longest size, but I did lose a bit of length trying the true up the hem. I'd like about two more inches at least. They are still great for summer fun around the water, but I don't wear them to sit down on the bus, for instance. The circle cut is such a pretty shape -- I'd like to try them again in the knee length. <br />

I made <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/07/chambray-felicity-skirt.html" target="_blank">more </a>matching separates in chambray. The top is Jennifer Lauren Vintage's <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/278762542/the-hunter-tank-blouse-womens-pdf-sewing?ref=shop_home_feat_3" target="_blank">Hunter Tank</a>. I compared it to my sloper to figure out my size, and then I made an FBA to accommodate my large lady lumps. I also shortened it quite a lot to hit at my waist, and I brought the waist in by several inches as well. On both pieces I used the wrong side of the chambray for trim, like the set in my last post. <img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1kIc3_Gf9Ug/V7y-YothFtI/AAAAAAAABAY/SbzaCKyTL1cn7kIlYw4l0iEIg00iJqcCQCLcB/s320/bIMG_3519.JPG" width="240" /></div>

<br />
The culottes are the <a href="http://helenscloset.ca/product/winslow-culottes/" target="_blank">Winslow </a>pattern. When <a href="http://helenscloset.ca/" target="_blank">Helen </a>announced this pattern I just kept opening her blog again and again to look at it. So I signed up to be a tester. Yeah, I tested this pattern! It was really fun because I really waned to make it. I wouldn't have minded paying for it, but I didn't want to wait! It was hard to decide which version to make, but I decided to test the shorts version first simply because they would take less fabric. With pants, I'm finding that I need to wear them around a bit before I can assess the fit.<br />

Here's my cutting layout. I knew I wanted to use the selvage as my hem, so I cut it in a single layer and overlapped the pieces at the crotch by the amount of the seam allowances to save a little fabric. I extended my pocket piece into the waist. I also took some height off the top of the center front and added quite a bit to the crotch extension on the back. You can also see that I made them shorter. <img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zJl2AjrA3-M/V7y-RfP3gMI/AAAAAAAAA_U/Z2JeYBitILkStE2xpfjshgVrHTS4lCvOwCLcB/s320/IMG_3244.JPG" width="240" /></div>

I bought the jersey with my dear friend <a href="http://awayisew.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Leah </a>out on Bainbridge Island. It makes a nice outfit with my culottes, too. <br />

Here's another little top I brought along on my weekend. It's a wearable muslin for an idea I had. Everyone seems to be sewing up those cute, sweet off the shoulder ruffle tops. I can't wear off the shoulder things because I need a bra with straps, but I love the look of the ruffle. I just made my ruffle so it sits on my shoulders.</div>

These pictures were taken on 4th of July weekend up at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roche_Harbor%2C_Washington" target="_blank">Roche Harbor.</a> It was my first time going there. What a sweet place! There's a big marina, and old hotel, restaurant, bar with live music, a little store, and some rental cabins.I went up on my friends' sailboat.</div>

On the dock you can by fresh caught seafood. I had no idea that the local, fresh prawns were so sweet! They tasted as good s crab... until a neighboring boat gave us a crab they'd just brought in. Yum!!!!<br />

There's also a lovely sculpture park. It's about 20 acres, as I recall, with about 200 sculptures.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I mentioned that I bought a whole bolt of chambray? I don't want to ruin the suspense... but I've made a lot of things out of chambray lately, more to come. These pieces are two of the most versatile and easy to wear. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-axxHcPLL7Bc/V4cdtPQL2LI/AAAAAAAAA-s/d1zXHWhbZoEE3djfxkBb1HQjzf5eQKTvQCLcB/s1600/IMG_3314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-axxHcPLL7Bc/V4cdtPQL2LI/AAAAAAAAA-s/d1zXHWhbZoEE3djfxkBb1HQjzf5eQKTvQCLcB/s320/IMG_3314.JPG" width="240" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The top is the same pattern as my shift <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/05/blue-shift.html" target="_blank">dress </a>but cropped to the waist and with back waist darts. I used the same treatment for the scooped back with the rouleau strip to hold it on my shoulders. I used the wrong side of the fabric for contrast trim. I love this top with... ok, lots of things! But I wear it very often with my high-waisted skinny black jeans and a white or red belt. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The skirt is <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2015/12/felicity-separates.html" target="_blank">another</a> <a href="http://www.jenniferlaurenvintage.com/2016/04/new-felicity-skirt-pattern-free.html" target="_blank">Felicity </a>skirt. I also added some contrast with the wrong side of the fabric in the waist band. This skirt! I just wear it all the time with all kinds of tops. It's an easy piece to mix. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QWTwEQD3XgU/V18EHfl_yQI/AAAAAAAAA84/N4oG9pMSBUoI6mDz95IXcLSXb8fSidYXgCLcB/s1600/IMG_3228.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QWTwEQD3XgU/V18EHfl_yQI/AAAAAAAAA84/N4oG9pMSBUoI6mDz95IXcLSXb8fSidYXgCLcB/s320/IMG_3228.JPG" width="240" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been working on refining the fit I need for shorts/pants. Shorts seem like a better place to start since they use less fabric, right? I'd love to have more shorts for summer. However, I need the fit to be just right so that they are comfortable for a lot of walking and bike riding. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-II9tl-_w2WY/V18EHXuBGuI/AAAAAAAAA80/TKOO0z6c-EocK_1cS5zvvZuzROxM3Ra3wCLcB/s1600/IMG_3232.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-II9tl-_w2WY/V18EHXuBGuI/AAAAAAAAA80/TKOO0z6c-EocK_1cS5zvvZuzROxM3Ra3wCLcB/s320/IMG_3232.JPG" width="240" /> </a></div>
I bought the <a href="http://shop.sewingcake.com/products/endeavour-trousers" target="_blank">Endeavor </a>pattern from <a href="http://sewingcake.com/" target="_blank">Cake </a>last summer. I like the style and the idea that the pants are drafted to accommodate different hip/waist ratios.<br />
<br />
I made the size 40 with the size 28 waist. The fit of my first muslin was closer than most other shorts I've tried, other than the red <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2015/12/chataigne-shorts.html" target="_blank">Chataigne </a>shorts that worked out well (the top is from that post, too). I did have to smooth out the high hip curve significantly, add 1.5" to the back inseam at the crotch, and added 5." flare to the center front piece at the seam at the center of the leg. I also hemmed them right up to the bottom of the pocket.<br />
<br />
This is a wearable muslin of those changes with some navy blue cotton from my stash. It's not super heavy but heavier than quilting cotton. It really worked well for these shorts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-emn1XmfVi-4/V18EHoLZyxI/AAAAAAAAA9A/PMXEGlM-GWQFhRR7XZ9s7bqLwD1JyjMogCLcB/s1600/IMG_3236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-emn1XmfVi-4/V18EHoLZyxI/AAAAAAAAA9A/PMXEGlM-GWQFhRR7XZ9s7bqLwD1JyjMogCLcB/s320/IMG_3236.JPG" width="293" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They are mostly perfect. However, you can see below that with some movement, they eventually have the same problem that I've encountered with my other attempts at shorts -- they shift to the back and give me awkward creases at the front. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j-0Tz6TomqI/V18EHBiq_6I/AAAAAAAAA8w/DZSZ2-rPGAIP1uuJWruioHkS-mrkDRBogCLcB/s1600/IMG_3234.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j-0Tz6TomqI/V18EHBiq_6I/AAAAAAAAA8w/DZSZ2-rPGAIP1uuJWruioHkS-mrkDRBogCLcB/s320/IMG_3234.JPG" width="240" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I have a new idea about the cause. Maybe the front rise is too long? On my next pair I want to shorten the front rise by 1" at the waist and extend the back crotch another 2". Also, I still need to smooth out the hip curve even more on my pattern piece. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mPa80Chhaik/V18EIdlcIII/AAAAAAAAA9U/ua3E8sRouzoyN26ptCA54mgRsKALTmPLQCLcB/s1600/IMG_3237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mPa80Chhaik/V18EIdlcIII/AAAAAAAAA9U/ua3E8sRouzoyN26ptCA54mgRsKALTmPLQCLcB/s320/IMG_3237.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

I used some scraps of a pretty print for the pocket and waistband. I top-stitched the pocket openings, front seams, and back yoke. Yes, I should have ironed these for the pictures... but they were straight from the laundry, and I just put them right on to go run around in the sunshine.<br />

I'm very happy with this first pair of Endeavors, and with a few adjustments I expect this to be a TNT. I'd like to try the sailor view soon. Thanks for visiting!Turbohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086953373335697307noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3368032195318402935.post-37181988003821760032016-06-07T14:04:00.000-07:002016-06-07T14:04:52.763-07:00Chambray Ruffle Set<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Happy summer! Wow, so, global warming, huh? I was swimming in Lake Union for hours on May 2nd. Anybody else worried? Anyway... Lovely weather for outdoor concerts at the winery. Here I am in a little self-made set waiting for the doors to open to see Bob Dylan at <a href="https://www.ste-michelle.com/" target="_blank">Chateau Ste. Michelle</a>. It's a great venue. You can bring in blankets, low chairs, and any food you want. We packed a lovely picnic. They sell the wine at normal price, plus the wine club discount... too easy!<br />

This is the <a href="http://www.stripedswallowdesigns.com/collections/women/products/coachella-shorts-pattern-women-xs-xxl" target="_blank">Coachella Shorts </a>in the smallest size, high waist, short inseam, with an extra-wide waistband. I trimmed them with a ruffle made of 2" bias strips folded in half and gathered. The crop top is modified from my block without the front waist darts, and... some "make it work" moments. I used chambray from Joann's. I bought a lot of chambray to use for wearable muslins and experiments. </div>

<br />
Above, you can see where I had to piece the back of the shorts because of a cutting error. I wanted to shorten the front rise, and cut it from the center back by mistake. Oops, new design lines! <br />
<br />
Similarly, the top, below, is a saga of botched ideas that finally worked out pretty well. It was initially envisioned as more plain, cut from the top of my <a href="https://thekninja.blogspot.com/2016/05/blue-shift.html" target="_blank">shift </a>pattern, but with the back darts and ruffles at the shoulders. The ruffles looked ridiculous hanging off those wide-cut shoulders, so I removed them and intended to just cut the shoulders in a bit... But I cut out the neck hole more instead! Bah!! So I gathered the front to bring it in, and pinched out darts as a "design line" at the high bust to deal with the creases that caused. At the back I made a centered dart to pull it in, plus keyhole... finished it all with self bias tape, and I love it! Ah, lucky save.<br />

What is she talking about?" Haha, baby steps! Here's the next iteration. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pqCJu_1SAqM/V0ywsxuWxgI/AAAAAAAAA50/-P8qxCtsPXgyQ5KAZCgdUC9ED1lVCNtwACLcB/s1600/F_3158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pqCJu_1SAqM/V0ywsxuWxgI/AAAAAAAAA50/-P8qxCtsPXgyQ5KAZCgdUC9ED1lVCNtwACLcB/s320/F_3158.JPG" width="205" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's some extra pictures because I can't decide how I feel about this style. Opinions? Feedback so far has been "elegant". That's nice... but wearing it I feel like I'm in a hospital gown. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6_fsJsZnzq8/V0ywsirn8xI/AAAAAAAAA5w/1JkZKfvxUdYY8cvayKdTmnxm-lI1_uBnQCLcB/s1600/F_3147.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6_fsJsZnzq8/V0ywsirn8xI/AAAAAAAAA5w/1JkZKfvxUdYY8cvayKdTmnxm-lI1_uBnQCLcB/s320/F_3147.JPG" width="213" /></a> </div>
This is a navy blue rayon challis. I ironed it immediately before these pictures! It wrinkled that much just from leaning over to put my shoes on. Oh, well. It's finished with store bought bias tape turned to the inside and top stitched. <br />

Some of these pictures are more flattering than others. The side view is perhaps not the prettiest part of this dress. <br />

I considered several solutions to keep it in place and not show my bra. I think the simplest is the most effective -- little safety pins through my bra straps at the shoulders.</div>

In the past year or two I've been seeing the trendy silhouette shift to a looser shape. Many sewing bloggers have made beautiful, loose dresses that look lovely on them, <a href="http://sallieoh.blogspot.com/2014/10/greenness-gathers-and-gratitude.html" target="_blank">1</a>, <a href="http://www.adaspragg.com/2016/05/05/metallic-midi-dress/" target="_blank">2</a>, <a href="https://crabandbee.com/2016/04/24/in-the-details/" target="_blank">3</a>, <a href="http://truebias.com/2016/04/roscoe-off-the-shoulder-hack.html" target="_blank">4</a> to point out a few. In particular, the <a href="http://papercutpatterns.com/collections/dresses/products/flutter-blouse-tunic" target="_blank">Flutter </a>dress from <a href="http://papercutpatterns.com/" target="_blank">Papercut </a>captured my imagination. Here are some inspiring examples: <a href="https://sewbusylizzy.com/tag/papercut-patterns/" target="_blank">1</a>, <a href="http://bmade.canalblog.com/archives/2015/07/09/32256901.html" target="_blank">2</a>, <a href="http://www.sewunravelled.com/2015/09/sewn-anniversary-dress.html" target="_blank">3</a>. <br />
<br />
This is not that pattern. I'm not sure this trend is for me, much as I'd like it to be. A shapeless sack drapes elegantly on a slender figure, or, specifically, a figure that is slender on top. Can it work for us well endowed ladies? Only one way to find out...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N4OF8LOtrtY/VzuqlNEj8uI/AAAAAAAAA3Y/H_QcbQip9Woim-Z4hlzZZxwU5i5ul35EACLcB/s1600/IMG_3117.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-N4OF8LOtrtY/VzuqlNEj8uI/AAAAAAAAA3Y/H_QcbQip9Woim-Z4hlzZZxwU5i5ul35EACLcB/s320/IMG_3117.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I decided to ease in slowly. I lengthened my basic sloper, played with
the neck and shoulder line, and... left out the waist darts front and
back. Whoa! This is my wearable muslin made in a rayon challis from
eBay. I finished the neck and armholes with store-bought black bias
tape. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xlxjxPe1t5Y/VzuqlJHPW_I/AAAAAAAAA3c/Zao3nUj8ZO4dy1Q6vDsVUAwa3fuEUO43ACLcB/s1600/IMG_3124.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xlxjxPe1t5Y/VzuqlJHPW_I/AAAAAAAAA3c/Zao3nUj8ZO4dy1Q6vDsVUAwa3fuEUO43ACLcB/s320/IMG_3124.JPG" width="210" /></a></div>
It came out to be very wearable. It needs a belt only because I was sloppy about putting in the side-seam pockets and skipped the stay tape, so the pockets pouch strangely around the hip. I can shimmy in and out without a closure, so it's a quick sew. Verdict on the sack? <br />I made <a href="http://www.thekninja.blogspot.com/2014/09/myrtle-dress.html" target="_blank">another</a> <a href="https://www.colettepatterns.com/catalog/myrtle" target="_blank">Myrtle </a>dress, this time in a plain, black, rayon jersey from JoAnn's. I have to admit, though I love prints and color, that this dress is easy to wear a lot. I wanted to try slimming down the bodice and an idea I had for the back. I re-traced the pattern in the smallest size and compared it to my "sexy fit" T block, example <a href="http://www.thekninja.blogspot.com/2014/07/short-shorts.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I left it with a bit more room than the T for some blousey effect. I wish I'd added length to the skirt, though I did cut the skirt at the length for the largest size. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
Here's the back. Ok, I know it's hard to see in the black from a distance. <img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jnZIT0c3PuY/VtcyOVU3QoI/AAAAAAAAA2M/TflYhS62Qy0/s320/IMG_2874.JPG" width="320" />I fixed something that I didn't like in the original and added a cut-out, which I love. <br />I didn't like how the back neck and armholes are just turned and hemmed. I found that difficult to do nicely. My solution was to use two back pieces that overlap from the armholes up. Then below the arm holes each piece is cut on a diagonal to the waist. All the edges are then enclosed nicely except for the two straight edges of the diagonal, which are easy to hem or finish with a band. It leaves a little peep of low back and adds some ventilation for hot summer days. I love this simple hack and plan to make several more Myrtles like this. <br />

Aloha! Ok... I started this post on vacation. I've been home for quite some time now, but let's just roll with these pictures from tropical paradise. <br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RdEGDtv-zn0/Vm3HYUHftdI/AAAAAAAAA0U/HbdZfcmTo4g/s1600/12122015%2B016.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RdEGDtv-zn0/Vm3HYUHftdI/AAAAAAAAA0U/HbdZfcmTo4g/s320/12122015%2B016.JPG" width="240" /></a><br />
I tried the Rite of Spring Shorts <a href="http://thekninja.blogspot.com/2014/07/short-shorts.html" target="_blank">again</a>. Somehow I had thought this pattern was already fitted and ready to just sew up. Then, as I tried on the shorts in progress, I suddenly recalled that I had done lots of on-the-fly alterations to make the first pair fit at all. This pair turned out huge. Upon checking my pattern pieces and reviewing the size chart, I determined that I had cut a size too big to start with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VCjujHaa6Ns/Vm3HIAxplQI/AAAAAAAAAz8/E5RASJbytkU/s1600/12122015%2B014.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VCjujHaa6Ns/Vm3HIAxplQI/AAAAAAAAAz8/E5RASJbytkU/s320/12122015%2B014.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
If you look closely at that back view you can see where I took in the back with two long seams. I removed about 8 inches before I attached the waistband. You can see that the fit through the crotch back and front is still problematic. My biggest issue is that when I walk the shorts shift back so I have a baggy butt and camel toe effect up front. No!!! I will try detaching a bit of the waistband in front so I can shorten the front crotch length. I really like the idea of these shorts and will continue to work with this pattern. <br />
<br />
I made the top for <a href="https://www.facebook.com/jasongarms/videos/10152949062100927/" target="_blank">my show</a>. I'm pretty sure that link won't work. I'll try to update it at some point with a better link. The bow is designed to cover your bra strap. You can buckle your bra right through the "knot" to keep it in place. Here's some pictures of my lovely friend Kelly modeling this top with different shorts on the runway.<br />

Here is the first <a href="http://www.jenniferlaurenvintage.com/p/shop.html" target="_blank">Felicity </a>I made. I already blogged my second version <a href="http://www.thekninja.blogspot.com/2015/05/felicitous-photo-shoot.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I love this outfit and wore it a lot all summer. </div>
I used a red polka dot grey chambray from <a href="http://www.blogforbettersewing.com/" target="_blank">Gertie's</a> line for Joann's. I like it, but it does love to wrinkle. I finished the edges and trimmed the skirt waistband with purchased red bias tape. I don't recall which size I made, but I followed the sizing chart. <br />

Surprise! It's separates. I made the bodice first as a wearable muslin after my first true muslin and an FBA. Then it came out so well, I decided to make up the matching skirt. <br />
<br />
<br />
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JKPOHBw-KO4/Vm8Mi7zbAxI/AAAAAAAAA1I/xachsO5mRuk/s320/12-14-15%2B016.JPG" width="240" /><br />
I love that they are separates. I like the skirt with a black or navy T-shirt. The top is cute with the shorts from my last <a href="http://www.thekninja.blogspot.com/2015/12/chataigne-shorts.html" target="_blank">post</a>. Before I got completely consumed by school this summer, I did quite a bit of summer sewing. I'm on a short vacation on Kauai right now, camera in hand, so I figure it's a great opportunity to blog some of these old projects. <br />
First up, I have my first pair of <a href="http://boutique.deer-and-doe.fr/chataigne-shorts.html" target="_blank">Chataigne Shorts</a> from <a href="http://www.deer-and-doe.fr/?lang=2" target="_blank">Deer and Doe</a> and another <a href="http://www.mariadenmark.com/" target="_blank">Maria of Denmark</a> Kimono Tee, modified like my last <a href="http://www.thekninja.blogspot.com/2014/07/short-shorts.html" target="_blank">one</a>. Here's some photos, front, side, and back: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t2fCKbucVhE/VmxhN5hYR5I/AAAAAAAAAyk/zHGCp92dVdY/s1600/2015_12_10%2B1053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t2fCKbucVhE/VmxhN5hYR5I/AAAAAAAAAyk/zHGCp92dVdY/s320/2015_12_10%2B1053.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9g_B57X8AU/VmxhXuP4SVI/AAAAAAAAAys/tYrjokFkhaE/s1600/2015_12_10%2B1064.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9g_B57X8AU/VmxhXuP4SVI/AAAAAAAAAys/tYrjokFkhaE/s320/2015_12_10%2B1064.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MiIqQV-zXlk/VmxhhndR0SI/AAAAAAAAAzI/1ixalYGhUXQ/s1600/2015_12_10%2B1073.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MiIqQV-zXlk/VmxhhndR0SI/AAAAAAAAAzI/1ixalYGhUXQ/s320/2015_12_10%2B1073.JPG" width="232" /> </a><br />
I used a red, bottom-weight cotton for the shorts and an anchor print jersey for the shirt, both from Joann's. I made the shorts so long ago, the details are fuzzy. I don't recall which size I made, but I do believe I had to bring in the back waistband. I also added patch pockets under the flaps in the back. In future iterations I extended the inseam a bit right at the crotch, front and back. This pair is perfect once they stretch out with some wear, but they are a bit tight up in there right out of the wash. <br />
<br />
I also made a matching beach bag out of the same red cotton and some grey from my stash. It's a free <a href="http://verypurpleperson.com/2010/04/making-reversible-bag/" target="_blank">pattern </a>from Very Purple Person. I really like this bag, and I've made it several times now. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TvN9uhUvidw/VmxhZzjHpoI/AAAAAAAAAy0/0pydv7nQXh8/s1600/2015_12_10%2B1066.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TvN9uhUvidw/VmxhZzjHpoI/AAAAAAAAAy0/0pydv7nQXh8/s320/2015_12_10%2B1066.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Yep, reversible -- here's the grey color.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UU9kMgd4CdM/VmxhdjI9dBI/AAAAAAAAAy8/7tQAsKaZUSM/s1600/2015_12_10%2B1070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UU9kMgd4CdM/VmxhdjI9dBI/AAAAAAAAAy8/7tQAsKaZUSM/s320/2015_12_10%2B1070.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Here's some flat shots of the shorts. I apologize that they are completely un-ironed. Vacation. Also, I meant to crop my feet out of these photos, oh well. The contrast lining for the yoke and pockets is from an old shirt that could not be salvaged as a shirt but had nice embroidered fabric. Maybe you can't tell, but I got the point on the yoke nice and even, thanks to <a href="http://awayisew.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Leah</a>. I picked this pattern specifically to practice the V yoke for one of the looks in my collection. On the shirt I cut the neck a little deeper and gathered it with some pretty buttons. <br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IifNEZdmwPY/VV-aQfbMzSI/AAAAAAAAAw0/wdAgjUaNKdg/s1600/WP_20150520_025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IifNEZdmwPY/VV-aQfbMzSI/AAAAAAAAAw0/wdAgjUaNKdg/s320/WP_20150520_025.jpg" width="216" /></a><br />
<br />
I made a <a href="https://www.etsy.com/nz/listing/222911952/felicity-dress-ladies-pdf-sewing-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_6" target="_blank">Felicity Dress</a> by <a href="http://www.jenniferlaurenvintage.com/" target="_blank">Jennifer Lauren Vintage</a>. It's actually the second version I've made of this pattern. I just happened to get some quick photos when I went to a <a href="http://www.pnb.org/" target="_blank">Pacific Northwest Ballet</a> studio rehearsal with my dad. <br />
<br />
I used a polyester peachskin from my stash. I don't know how a synthetic snuck in there, but I love the print, and I didn't feel too precious about it if the dress didn't come out well. Ahhh, stash...<br />
<br />
I've realized a clear pattern in my acquisition of crafting supplies. Back when I first started to knit, I got very excited. I loved to envision beautiful projects, and then I'd get started with the first step -- buying supplies. Then I'd get nervous. I'd feel that I didn't have the skills to accomplish my vision, that I'd be wasting the lovely materials and creating garbage. So... I'd buy a different yarn to use. And repeat. I know, it's so silly! It's especially silly with knitting because you can always frog and reuse the yarn. Now I'm finally at a place in my knitting life where I can make anything I envision. It feels great, and I'm working through the huge stash I've acquired.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Cj7iSfPqGGw/VV-aP8vH_vI/AAAAAAAAAws/lQE4PS9Wc9Q/s1600/WP_20150520_024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Cj7iSfPqGGw/VV-aP8vH_vI/AAAAAAAAAws/lQE4PS9Wc9Q/s320/WP_20150520_024.jpg" width="195" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm looking forward to achieving the same proficiency and confidence in my sewing. See the fit on the Felicity bodice? Yay! I'm really happy with the <a href="http://www.jenniferlaurenvintage.com/2015/04/felicity-dress-sew-along-full-bust.html" target="_blank">FBA adjustment</a> from Jennifer Lauren's blog. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This long-stashed poly was actually very easy to work with once I starched the heck out of it. I rely on this trick frequently to give me confidence with slippery fabrics. It's trimmed with store-bought bias tape. </div>

I lowered the neckline after my first muslin by cutting it and transferring the new line to my pattern pieces. I cut the bodice on the bias to play with the stripes, and I used a gathered rectangle for the skirt. You can't tell, but I included in-seam pockets. I love cutout backs, so I made a simple modification to the back bodice. I'm really happy with how my idea turned out!<img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J3kaC-QxJHk/VV-aPNRH7YI/AAAAAAAAAwU/EHOyZPBk0TI/s320/WP_20150520_013.jpg" width="186" /></div>

I wore Felicity with my newly finished<a href="http://ravel.me/Turbo/ac" target="_blank"> Acer </a>cardi. This is another item from materials I've had for a long time, both the yarn and the pattern. I used the lovely Jo Sharp Silkroad DK Tweed, a blend of 85% wool/10% silk/5% cashmere. I made my usual modifications to fit me and to knit it seamlessly. This is the most cropped cardigan I've made, ending right at my waist. I really like it, and it used hardly any yarn. </div>

Here's another wintery knit that I've been wearing all the time. It's the classic Elizabeth Zimmerman round-yoke sweater formula with my usual hip/bust/waist shaping and an experiment with the neckline.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IXJceniKuGU/VQMyzX6acpI/AAAAAAAAAuk/m96CsaVVge4/s1600/DSC_8518%2B(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c5MXKFD4514/VQMyyo40lQI/AAAAAAAAAuU/SFjuvODgOM0/s1600/DSC_8521%2B(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c5MXKFD4514/VQMyyo40lQI/AAAAAAAAAuU/SFjuvODgOM0/s1600/DSC_8521%2B(2).jpg" height="320" width="202" /></a></div>
I wanted to really curve the fairisle yoke into a flattering frame for my face rather than allow it to settle in a horizontal line across my broad shoulders. To achieve this effect I set aside all the front neckline stitches above the bust (just after attaching the sleeves) and worked short rows in one stitch steps to build up the back and across the arms to the recommended half-way point. Then I picked up all my stitches, made my first set of decreases, and started the fairisle yoke. I just made it up as I went and used scraps from my stash. I love how it turned out!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bh2RaJewEvE/VQMyzmH_ysI/AAAAAAAAAuc/01VrEo_cyfU/s1600/DSC_8528%2B(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bh2RaJewEvE/VQMyzmH_ysI/AAAAAAAAAuc/01VrEo_cyfU/s1600/DSC_8528%2B(2).jpg" height="320" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I've been skiing in this sweater all the time and enjoying several compliments. I love wool. :)<br />
<br />
P.S. Before winter abandons the Northwest completely (Did she ever really arrive this year?), I'd like to show you the sweet snow queen of my lacy cardi collection. Yes, she'll work as a frosting over spring dresses for a few more months, but she is Warm. Hey, Alpaca. And she's <i>sooooft</i>, with a halo of luxury. I love her!<br />
<br />
This is <a href="http://untangling-knots.com/" target="_blank">Andi Satterlund's </a>pattern, <a href="http://untangling-knots.com/shop/patterns/garments/hetty/" target="_blank">Hetty</a>, knit in the Indecita Alpaca that I import from Peru. I especially like to knit Andi's patterns because she's in my neighborhood knitting group. She's such a talented knitter!<br />
<br />
Because I adore cables in cream, I couldn't resist adding my own twist to Andi's design. Since Hetty is knit from the top down, I worked the pattern as written until casting on stitches for the neck. Ok... sorry, actually, I rarely follow instructions. This is why I don't test knit. I fudged all the shaping, roughly moving the arm hole inwards and scooping the neckline much lower. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Kz853_mlfCQ/VQMjWNCF2GI/AAAAAAAAAtw/VfLwCARF0Ic/s1600/DSC_8575%2B(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Kz853_mlfCQ/VQMjWNCF2GI/AAAAAAAAAtw/VfLwCARF0Ic/s1600/DSC_8575%2B(2).jpg" height="320" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gIBqowqhP2s/VQMjXlS1lEI/AAAAAAAAAt4/1-U_WXCNefI/s1600/DSC_8591%2B(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gIBqowqhP2s/VQMjXlS1lEI/AAAAAAAAAt4/1-U_WXCNefI/s1600/DSC_8591%2B(2).jpg" height="320" width="212" /></a><br />
When I cast on for the front neckline, I always add extra stitches to
accommodate my mountainous topography. In this case, instead of simply
adding repeats of the Hetty lace pattern, I used the extra stitches to
incorporate a 2x2 cable down each front edge.<br />
<br />
Hetty then got my usual shaping over the bust with short rows and side shaping. In this construction, after the short rows, I just needed decreases below the apex to reduce the stitch count I cast on at the front neck. I maintained the side-"seam" decreases to whittle my waist circumference with 4" negative ease.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LFFk_gzmENM/VQMjVdMiZRI/AAAAAAAAAto/gh_JhRJDjGE/s1600/DSC_8572%2B%282%29.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LFFk_gzmENM/VQMjVdMiZRI/AAAAAAAAAto/gh_JhRJDjGE/s1600/DSC_8572%2B(2).jpg" height="320" width="212" /></a><br />
My original intention had been to only add the two vertical cables along the button bands. I think that also would have been very lovely. If I knit another Hetty, I'll do just that. However, I got excited about the lovely cream cables and decided to add more. Ah, cables! Cables are my favorite thing to knit. <br />
<br />
To create the wide cabled band, I put all the body stitches on a holder except for one of the cabled panels. Really, just leave all those stitches on their needle and grab a new needle for the little cabled panel. Ok, really, I just did it all on one needle, but... It makes more sense to think about all the body stitches being on hold while you work the bottom band across them in the perpendicular direction.<br />
So, anyhow. I worked just the one cabled front panel, plus and extra stitch added for selvage, down to the desired length of the cardigan. Then I picked up stitches for the cable panel through the selvage stitch. I believe I picked up the right number for just the cables and then increased immediately to create the 2-stitch purl columns between them. This was to compensate for the compression from cabling. As I worked each row, I'd K2tog (or could have been SSK depending on direction, don't recall) the last stitch together with a stitch from the body. In this way I worked the band across all the body stitches until I reached the other front cabled panel. In the last row of the band I decreased all the purl stitches to match the first side. Finally, I worked that remaining front cabled panel down, using a decrease to combine the last stitch with a stitch from the band until I reached the end and bound off. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L-HG4D62E-4/VQMjYBU5CKI/AAAAAAAAAt8/O8jBSLpTVcE/s1600/DSC_8607%2B%282%29.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L-HG4D62E-4/VQMjYBU5CKI/AAAAAAAAAt8/O8jBSLpTVcE/s1600/DSC_8607%2B(2).jpg" height="320" width="212" /></a>I then picked up and knit all the ribbed trim as usual, including along the bottom of the cabled band.<br />
<br />
What else can I say? How about the buttons? Choosing the buttons for my Hetty was a fun challenge. I'd initially envisioned inconspicuous cream buttons, but all the contenders I found were too white and made my cardi look dirty in comparison. I considered wood or metal buttons but found the effect to be too Hansel and Gretel. I'd nearly conceded to the alternative of contrast buttons when I found The Perfect Buttons for my sweetheart. I think they give a lovely vintage aesthetic and allow Hetty to pair with a variety of outfits. <br />

Here`s another simple dress in a stretchy knit. It`s the <a href="http://blog.mariadenmark.com/?p=875" target="_blank">Kimono Tee</a> again, this time with a full skirt. This is now the easiest dress I make. The skirt is just the width of the fabric gathered on my serger, which is a new trick I learned <a href="http://foursquarewalls.blogspot.ca/2014/08/how-to-gather-fabric-with-serger.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Amazing! This is why I really want to become a better blogger -- because I love reading other people`s blogs. Four Square Walls is one of my favorites. Another blogger I enjoy, <a href="http://joliesbobines.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Jolies Bobines</a>, just used a similar fabric for a lovely <a href="http://joliesbobines.wordpress.com/2014/10/22/monettie/" target="_blank">dress</a>. Wow, she`s so talented! Anyhow, back to me... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jlqj3I6NuLA/VEl62hdmxUI/AAAAAAAAArk/8RsfLz8HaRc/s1600/IMG_5517.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jlqj3I6NuLA/VEl62hdmxUI/AAAAAAAAArk/8RsfLz8HaRc/s1600/IMG_5517.JPG" height="320" width="199" /></a></div>
The sweater I`m wearing is the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/maggie-wrap" target="_blank">Maggie Wrap</a> by <a href="http://www.crochetbyfaye.com/" target="_blank">Robyn Chachula</a>. My Ravelry page is <a href="http://ravel.me/Turbo/mw" target="_blank">here</a>. It`s made with the DK weight baby alpaca I import from Peru whenever I can get my friend to bring it back for me. I love this yarn! The wooden buttons are from Etsy. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eZ-fy5zuFyM/VEl64urDgDI/AAAAAAAAAsA/dAGc0QWZl7M/s1600/IMG_5524.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eZ-fy5zuFyM/VEl64urDgDI/AAAAAAAAAsA/dAGc0QWZl7M/s1600/IMG_5524.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
Here`s the dress on its own, front and back. Can you notice my mistake?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gOzCrPMie6E/VEl67efIeRI/AAAAAAAAAsU/2aWaNqSlvkA/s1600/IMG_5537.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gOzCrPMie6E/VEl67efIeRI/AAAAAAAAAsU/2aWaNqSlvkA/s1600/IMG_5537.JPG" height="320" width="225" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cx0PmhGXGFs/VEl66XMkXhI/AAAAAAAAAsI/FXihZSs29EE/s1600/IMG_5534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cx0PmhGXGFs/VEl66XMkXhI/AAAAAAAAAsI/FXihZSs29EE/s1600/IMG_5534.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I didn`t even notice that the triangles were upside down on the upper back until I saw these pictures. Oops! I don`t mind. At this point in my skill-building I`m just pleased that I made a dress I can enjoy. Slightly random point of interest -- it has inseam pockets.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i8WgVnqdQc4/VEl67G-_RCI/AAAAAAAAAsM/daV4ibC0Of0/s1600/IMG_5536.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i8WgVnqdQc4/VEl67G-_RCI/AAAAAAAAAsM/daV4ibC0Of0/s1600/IMG_5536.JPG" height="320" width="225" /></a></div>
Because this fabric has less stretch, although a jersey like the last dress, the bodice turned out a bit snug and shorter as a result. I fixed it by adding a wide elastic waist band, which I think looks great with the black fold-over elastic I used to finish the neck and armholes. Save!<br />

Did I mention that one of the reason's I've wanted to start sewing is so that I can make outfits that utilize all the sweaters I've made? This <a href="http://ravel.me/Turbo/a1" target="_blank">sweater </a>hasn't seen much use yet, though I made it about two years ago. It's the Argo by <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/designers/svetlana-volkova">Svetlana Volkova</a>. Darn it, why did I change the cute pockets??? My man convinced me that they'd be unflattering. At least I still have pockets! I also added the belt. I knit it lengthwise and didn't bother calculating an intended length at all, so it's quite long. I like it well enough tied in a bow. The yarn is a delicious wool/silk tweed that languished in my stash for far too long, <a href="http://www.yarndex.com/yarn.cfm?yarn_id=5674" target="_blank">Queensland Collection Kathmandu</a>.<br />
And here's the strip tease....<br />

<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ta da! Here's the dress I made. It's blue. It's a cotton-spandex jersey version of the Maria of Denmark<a href="http://blog.mariadenmark.com/?p=875" target="_blank"> Kimono Tee</a>, cut down a little slimmer and attached at the waist to a simple straight skirt. </div>

I made a <a href="https://www.colettepatterns.com/sewing/myrtle" target="_blank">Myrtle </a>dress from <a href="https://www.colettepatterns.com/" target="_blank">Colette Patterns</a>. I'm wearing it here at my friends' wedding at <a href="http://www.wilridgewinery.com/" target="_blank">Wilridge</a> vineyard in Naches Heights, WA. We all camped out afterwards and floated the Yakima river the next day. Great wedding!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F41rLMJqP54/VBHeBz0t-TI/AAAAAAAAAns/NNWRNrnKRys/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F41rLMJqP54/VBHeBz0t-TI/AAAAAAAAAns/NNWRNrnKRys/s1600/007.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I loved the design immediately and bought it on the day of its release.
Cowl necks are my favorite neckline, and I love easy, knit dresses. I wanted to find a fabric with a small scale print to hide any sewing flaws for me first try. I also wanted it to be non-directional because the skirt is a bit of a circle skirt. This rayon jersey is perfect! It's from JoAnn's, if you can believe it, and on sale. How lucky!<br />
<br />
I cut out the medium according to my measurements, but I took lots of room out of the bodice once I tried it on. This size would be best for a woven version, but for the next knit <a href="https://www.colettepatterns.com/sewing/myrtle" target="_blank">Myrtle </a>I'll re-print the pattern to cut a size XS. I'll also follow the advice of some other bloggers and line to back bodice as well. I love the way the front bodice is cut in one piece with its lining.<br />
<br />
Here are a few very sunny pictures to show how I like to style it with a red belt and red sandals. <br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-grjp9NkfiRY/U9a439iBh-I/AAAAAAAAAmQ/gSKfq6mOKnI/s1600/IMG_2392+YES.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-grjp9NkfiRY/U9a439iBh-I/AAAAAAAAAmQ/gSKfq6mOKnI/s1600/IMG_2392+YES.jpg" height="320" width="233" /></a></div>
Once
upon a time, about three years ago, my friend asked me if I'd like to
take a sewing class with her. We sewed plain muslin squares for a
month, enjoyed it enough, and signed up for another month of plain
muslin squares. That was the beginning of this dress. <br />
<br />
I
ended up taking classes for years -- pattern making, draping, and
finally sloper --before I could start making a dress for myself. From
designing this dress to going once a week to pattern making and
construction classes, this dress took me over a year. Add all the
build-up, and I'm counting three years to get here. Ta-Da!! This is my
Black Dress, a major milestone in the curriculum at <a href="http://www.newyorkfashionacademy.com/" target="_blank">NYFA</a>. <br />
<br />
You can see Casy's awesome Black Dress <a href="http://blog.indieknits.com/2013/03/fo-black-dress.html" target="_blank">here</a>. If I find links to other Black Dresses from school, I'll add them. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My
favorite feature is the back detail. I like how the scallops continue
from the V-back neckline down the row of buttons. I also think the
little peeks of skin along the waist worked out well. <img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vp4A-PYxPZE/U9a44O4Hl2I/AAAAAAAAAmM/l0X_85TLP1E/s1600/IMG_2378+YES.jpg" height="320" width="244" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tGCCgtfmC9c/U9a43yqVuvI/AAAAAAAAAmI/mzgoRc3f8NA/s1600/IMG_2351+YES.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tGCCgtfmC9c/U9a43yqVuvI/AAAAAAAAAmI/mzgoRc3f8NA/s1600/IMG_2351+YES.jpg" height="320" width="251" /></a></div>
<br />
Here
you can see that I have pockets. Yes, pockets, I love you! Also, you
can see the scallops across the front neck-line here. And then there
are scallops, of course, all along the waist. I learned some things
about sewing scallops.<br />
1. DO NOT use a fabric with any stretch at
all. As you are manipulating your piece to get all those scallops just
right it will stretch and be very difficult. This fabric has some
stretch I hadn't noticed, and I had to use excessive hand basting to get
it to work.<br />
<br />
2. Freshen up your markings right before you
sew. I drew on my sew line for the scallops and found that it fades
noticeably if I waited to sew. Scallops are fiddly enough without
guessing where the line really is. <br />
<br />
3. Go slowly with a
tiny stitch. I dialed my stitch length down under 2, which helps in two
ways. It made my machine go more slowly, which was easier to control.
It also made me more confident that my stitches would hold after I
trimmed the seam very closely for all those curves. <br />
<br />
4.
Don't snip lots of little clips along the curve -- just trim it all down
to almost nothing and put an extra clip into each corner.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-blNn3quWzgg/U9a44nXmu8I/AAAAAAAAAmc/9RuDxHbJZho/s1600/IMG_2397+YES.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-blNn3quWzgg/U9a44nXmu8I/AAAAAAAAAmc/9RuDxHbJZho/s1600/IMG_2397+YES.jpg" height="320" width="235" /></a>
5. I've read since that larger scallops are easier to sew and that you
should leave a little flat space between each scallop so you don't get a
little wrinkle in the valleys. <br />
<br />
If I ever make this
dress again, I will review my own advice. I may also give the next
version a scalloped hem. Too much? I kind of feel hat if you are going
to have too many scallops, you should just go for it. Over the top
scallops, why not?<br />
<br />
<br />
Here's a shot of the
lovely beach where I took these photos on the Washington coast. Someday
I'll get a really camera and actually take nice photos. This area was
lovely, and I wish I could have captured it better.<br />

Sorry
I'm not a pro at formatting a blog post... I wanted to arrange all
these pictures better, but I cant figure it out right now. Anyway, here
are some construction details of my dress. It's rayon lined with more
rayon (bemberg). All the edges have facings that then connect to the
lining. I added a bra-strap holder with a tube of bias. I used snaps
behind the decorative buttons both because I was nervous about making
button holes and because it's easier to get off this way, what with the
closure being in the back. The lining is hemmed with the skirt, both
bound with a bias strip. Oh, and the earrings are from my recent trip
to San Cristobal, Mexico. <br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1amLPyTwzUI/U7s4HIXRVHI/AAAAAAAAAls/xROAYsYaivw/s1600/IMG_2313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1amLPyTwzUI/U7s4HIXRVHI/AAAAAAAAAls/xROAYsYaivw/s1600/IMG_2313.JPG" height="320" width="184" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made some short-shorts. These are the <a href="http://papercutpatterns.com/products/rite-of-spring-shorts" target="_blank">Rite of Spring Shorts</a> from Papercut Patterns. I made them up as a wearable muslin in some gray cotton from my stash. I just washed them, and they got even a bit shorter. Darn it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ErNzUGT7SIA/U7s4FSqjifI/AAAAAAAAAlM/H7tLE8UuadE/s1600/IMG_2296+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ErNzUGT7SIA/U7s4FSqjifI/AAAAAAAAAlM/H7tLE8UuadE/s1600/IMG_2296+(2).jpg" height="320" width="212" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There's the back. The zipper rippled a bit after the fabric shrank in the wash. It's still wearable -- if I have the courage to flaunt these shorts in public at all! I'm very proud of inserting the invisible zipper successfully and using piping for the first time. These were really an easy make. There are only 4 pattern pieces, and the fit was pretty good out of the envelope. I like the length in the back, which dips lower than the front of the legs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lr3vDojhAC4/U7s4FKdPbKI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/gW4_jgE3uaY/s1600/IMG_2302+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lr3vDojhAC4/U7s4FKdPbKI/AAAAAAAAAlQ/gW4_jgE3uaY/s1600/IMG_2302+(2).jpg" height="320" width="188" /></a></div>
There's the front again. I made my T-shirt, too. It's become my favorite quick, little pattern. It's just two pieces, front and back, from <a href="http://www.mariadenmark.com/" target="_blank">Marie of Denmark</a>. It's her free <a href="http://blog.mariadenmark.com/?p=875" target="_blank">Kimono Tee</a>, modified to be a bit slimmer and scooped in the back with the crossed-over detail. I've made several of these. It's such a great, fast basic! It takes me about an hour total to make one.<br />
<br />
Here, you can see the waist band of my shorts. Flashing! They sit well above my belly button.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2JL5Iyxk504/U7s4FFL_A9I/AAAAAAAAAlI/mg66tl0334M/s1600/IMG_2305+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2JL5Iyxk504/U7s4FFL_A9I/AAAAAAAAAlI/mg66tl0334M/s1600/IMG_2305+(2).jpg" height="320" width="170" /></a></div>
Here's the full back view. Lucky readers!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ytrXQO-m9uA/U7s4GMjjlvI/AAAAAAAAAlY/y9FbKQaN9ao/s1600/IMG_2308+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ytrXQO-m9uA/U7s4GMjjlvI/AAAAAAAAAlY/y9FbKQaN9ao/s1600/IMG_2308+(2).jpg" height="320" width="176" /></a></div>
And here's a good pic of that flattering curved seam with the piping. Piping! I did it! It's easy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sJ39DgxQ_90/U7s4Gse3lSI/AAAAAAAAAlg/8ylcwKiFAtI/s1600/IMG_2309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sJ39DgxQ_90/U7s4Gse3lSI/AAAAAAAAAlg/8ylcwKiFAtI/s1600/IMG_2309.JPG" height="320" width="183" /></a></div>
I swear these drag lines were no so bad before the shorts shrank in the wash!! I'm going to add some flare to the front piece next time. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Hello! I made it back to my blog. And I made a dress. What? I sew? I've been trying to learn to sew for a few years now. I've been taking classes at <a href="http://www.newyorkfashionacademy.com/" target="_blank">NYFA </a>for some time here and there. This Monday I finally started going full time as a certificate candidate. Back to school! <br />
<br />
This isn't actually my first dress, but it's my first "real" dress - made of a woven, with shaping, and actually wearable. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BFjsSOYU4dw/U6kD3SEWQTI/AAAAAAAAAiM/35VHPCE6ru0/s1600/bruise+1226.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BFjsSOYU4dw/U6kD3SEWQTI/AAAAAAAAAiM/35VHPCE6ru0/s1600/bruise+1226.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I have pockets.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-emd3jJIAM5U/U6kD9Ac_DrI/AAAAAAAAAis/UZ4LN0_-K4g/s1600/bruise+1230.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-emd3jJIAM5U/U6kD9Ac_DrI/AAAAAAAAAis/UZ4LN0_-K4g/s1600/bruise+1230.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">And no back!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CHk4tO9qOKY/U6kD73tn5zI/AAAAAAAAAik/Ze1e9FrXgio/s1600/bruise+1229.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CHk4tO9qOKY/U6kD73tn5zI/AAAAAAAAAik/Ze1e9FrXgio/s1600/bruise+1229.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Peek-a-boo</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
I used my sloper and converted it to a princess seam bodice. Then I converted the back to be open and to close with elastic as a slip-on. Zippers still make me nervous. The wide, navy blue elastic exactly covers my bra strap. The skirt is my sloper skirt in the front. In the back I used my sloper skirt back placed 5" from the fold to accommodate my hips to get it on and off. Then I let it gather over elastic encased in the waist band.<br />
<br />
The fabric is a cotton I stashed abut a year ago from ebay, I think. I still have over a yard of it left. I lined it with a sheer brown fabric some one gave me for free. <br />
<br />
I like this design for a casual sun dress. I'm going to make it again right away! I'm going to shorten the bodice by 1" and try using wide elastic for the entire waist band. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Here I paired it with tan accessories. The bag is Coach from years ago
when I worked corporate office jobs. The shoes are thrifted.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fpy_NWIATMU/U6kEErhrspI/AAAAAAAAAjU/5OH-Y4LqHRk/s1600/bruise+1235.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fpy_NWIATMU/U6kEErhrspI/AAAAAAAAAjU/5OH-Y4LqHRk/s1600/bruise+1235.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Matchy-matchy!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lbSPhiCZPcA/U6kEIIuBE7I/AAAAAAAAAjg/9K2kcJ3cmm8/s1600/bruise+1237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lbSPhiCZPcA/U6kEIIuBE7I/AAAAAAAAAjg/9K2kcJ3cmm8/s1600/bruise+1237.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I'm a goofball.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T2vmlEwxO9Y/U6kEY98aTsI/AAAAAAAAAk0/7vOxPoqVDPo/s1600/bruise+1247.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T2vmlEwxO9Y/U6kEY98aTsI/AAAAAAAAAk0/7vOxPoqVDPo/s1600/bruise+1247.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I also paired it with my<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Turbo/audrey-in-unst" target="_blank"> Audrey in Unst</a> cardigan, a pattern from <a href="http://twistcollective.com/collection/index.php/component/content/article/75-fall-2009-patterns/418-audrey-in-unst-by-gudrun-johnston" target="_blank">Twist Collective</a> that I knit a few years ago. I should have taken some detail shots. The fabric has pretty, stylized flowers on it with light blue, navy, and green. The sweater picks up the green perfectly. <br />
<br />
Here are a few pictures of me dancing around the garden in my me-made outfit. I'm so happy. I've wanted for years to be able to make pretty dresses to match all the sweaters I knit up. I'm finally starting to have the skills to make that happen. Yeah!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NJ45zyEOV1c/U6kEOwrlXtI/AAAAAAAAAkE/7dAXpuZwA44/s1600/bruise+1241.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NJ45zyEOV1c/U6kEOwrlXtI/AAAAAAAAAkE/7dAXpuZwA44/s1600/bruise+1241.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
And here's one last shot to make you laugh. :)<br />
<br />

<br />
I've been slow to write this post because there's so much to say about Chiloe. <br />
<br />
Chiloe is a lovely, special island.<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/10/08/3879.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/10/08/s_3879.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center>
We took a short ferry ride over, and on the ferry we met a lamb! Oh, teeny, tiny, wee, baby lambie!! I got to hold him, and he was super cuddly.<br />
We met the family who had just gone to buy this little lambie on the mainland, and we gave them a ride to their house on the island in Ancud. In typical Chilean style they insisted we stay for tea and sweets at their home. It's a wonderfully friendly, hospitable country. <br />
Here are some pictures of the darling baby lamb.<br />
<center>
<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/10/08/3880.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/10/08/s_3880.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center>
<br />
He's only three days old. Yes, he's wearing a diaper. <br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/10/08/3881.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/10/08/s_3881.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="205" /></a></center>
<br />

<br />
<br />
We then drove further into the island to the small city of Castro, a lovely historic town on a large bay in the center of the island.<br />
Here is the beautiful cathedral in Castro. (<i>Ok, let me take another opportunity to apologize for being a crappy photographer. Actually, Kurt probably took these pictures. Maybe mine would have been worse!</i>)<br />

<br />
This is the great hostel where we stayed, Pallafito.<br />

It is decorated with traditional local handcrafts. Above are some
weavings. The kitchen is equipped with hand made ceramics. It seems
Chiloe is just isolated enough to have a thriving, intact local
economy. Here
people are as likely to have a horse as a car because they are about
equally useful. People wear hand made clothes and lots of hand knits. The markets are full of locally grown food and
traditional local breads, pastries, preserves, and liquors. I would like to spend a lot more time here! <br />

<br />
There's a little town not far from Castro that is reputed to have the best, biggest, most amazing market in the area. I really, really wanted to go to the big Sunday market, but we were a day early. Still, it was lovely to browse the little shops and arcades.<br />

More to come soon. :)Turbohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086953373335697307noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3368032195318402935.post-517684930279668782012-11-20T10:54:00.000-08:002012-11-20T10:54:22.764-08:00I'm back :)I'm back! I mean that in two respects -- back from Chile (for awhile) and back on this blog (finally!). <br />
<br />
Naughty
blogger that I am, I've let lots of life and lots of knitting happen
without finishing the story of my trip to Chile. I went to <a href="http://knitfit.info/" target="_blank">Knit Fit</a> out in Ballard and saw some of the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/groups/seattle-purlygirls" target="_blank">Purly Girls</a> there. Every one was so nice, and I realized... whoa, people do read my blog. I'd better be a better blogger! <br />
<br />
I promise to finish telling all about my trip to Chile. I'll start... tomorrow.<br />
<br />
Knit Fit was great. The first day I hung out with <a href="http://zestyfiberist.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Sooz </a>all day, and the second day I took a class from <a href="http://www.jenhagan.com/" target="_blank">Jennifer Hagan</a>. She blogs about it <a href="http://figknits.blogspot.com/2012/11/knit-fit-one.html?m=1" target="_blank">here</a>. It was a really good class. I learned a lot and met wonderful people. Now I really want to make the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sherrod" target="_blank">Sherrod </a>sweater.<br />
<br />
I also met <a href="http://weaverknits.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Anne Weaver</a>.
She was wonderful and friendly. I really admire her style and her
designs. Her look is really graphic and modern, which I find refreshing
in hand knits. She let me wear her <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-doubloon" target="_blank">Doubloon </a>shawl
around while she was teaching. It was soft and beautiful, and I
actually think the color is good for me. It's a design from her new
book, White Whale II,which I bought and she signed. So fun!<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
In other fiber news, I recently when to an exhibit at the Bellevue Art Museum. <br />
<center>
<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/11/14/1771.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/11/14/s_1771.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center>
My friend <a href="http://www.lukehaynes.com/" target="_blank">Luke Haynes</a> showed a collection of pieces. It's my first time seeing his work, and he's awesome!!
Luke, buddy, you rock! I should have taken better notes on the names
of these pieces, but I'm sure Luke will happily answer any questions if
you contact him through his website.<br />

<br />
These baskets were gorgeous.<br />

<br />
<br />
I
have to admit something a little embarrassing... I included this
really intricate, adorable, and symbolic quilt especially because it
reminded me of <a href="http://ysolda.com/" target="_blank">Ysolda</a>.
Yes, I have a total knit-crush on her. What! You do, too. She's an
amazing knitter. I want to make all her designs. I wish my photos
showed this quilt better. <br />

<br />
Here we are hiking across steam fields. The volcanoes here are so active! We got pretty high, but neither time did I make it all the way to the top.<br />
<br />

<br />
It was still a lovely ski down.<br />
<br />

<br />
And here's a gratuitous picture of hand knits from a local ski shop.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/12/3262.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/12/s_3262.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center>

They had some interesting needle-felted cowls. Kurt found a dress in his colors. ;)<br />

<br />
On a final note in Chillan, there is a big hot spring right in the parking lot for the ski area. Awesome!<br />
<br />

<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/12/3265.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/12/s_3265.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Our next destination was Pucon, adventure playground of Chile. It's much more developed, really a little city. <br />
<br />

<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/12/3267.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/12/s_3267.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center>

<br />
It's quaint, on a big lake, and - yeah - next to a giant volcano, Villarica.<br />
We spent over a week in Pucon, but since this is the "Adventuras" post, I'll tell you about the volcano.<br />
<br />
We tried twice to climb Villarica. The first time we were blown away by the fierce wind. The second time we fared better.<br />
<br />
<br />

<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/12/3271.jpg"><img border="0" height="210" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/12/s_3271.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a></center>

<br />
We got to within 100 feet of the top, but I don't have any pictures from that high. It was intense. It was very steep, precariously icy, and buffeted by wind. We had to abandon our hopes to see the steaming lava crater, but there was still plenty of adventure ahead.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/12/3274.jpg"><img border="0" height="210" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/12/s_3274.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a></center>

<br />
We skied off the backside, across a vast glacier, and down a creek into the temperate rainforest.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/12/3277.jpg"><img border="0" height="210" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/12/s_3277.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a></center>

<br />
After more than 10 hours of adventure, we finally reached...<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/show_photo.php?p=12/08/12/3280.jpg"><img border="0" height="281" src="http://photo.blogpressapp.com/photos/12/08/12/s_3280.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="210" /></a></center>

... Geometricas, the most beautiful hot springs I've ever seen! <br />
<br />

<br />
And they fed me hot, delicious soup. <br />
The end.Turbohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11086953373335697307noreply@blogger.com1
